The NBS was established in July 2010, under the new National Bureau of Statistics Act, 2010 and operates as a semi-autonomous government agency responsible for collecting, compiling, analyzing and publishing statistical information. The Bureau is also responsible for coordinating, monitoring and supervising the National Statistical System.
The NBS replaces the National Statistics Bureau (NSB) which was setup in 2005.
Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics
A key responsibility of the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) is to assist countries in the development of their national statistical system. This is by actively promoting the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics (FPOS) which were adopted by the Statistical Commission in 1994. The FPOS are as relevant today as they had been in the past.
So far, the United Nations Statistics Division has undertaken two global reviews of the implementation of the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics mandated by the United Nations Statistical Commission. Below is the UN FPOS Implementation Guidelines Manual.
The 20th of October 2015 marked the second World Statistics Day with the theme “BetterData Better Lives“. To mark this occasion the UN Secretary General has issued a message which can be found here UN SG Statistics 2015-message
